What ISO 9001 is
ISO 9001:2015 is the international standard for quality management systems, published by the International Organization for Standardization. It sets out how an organisation plans, runs, checks and improves its work so customers get consistent results. It applies to any organisation, of any size, in any sector, from manufacturers and oil and gas service companies to schools, hospitals and government agencies.
Why Nigerian organisations get ISO 9001 certified
- Oil and gas: NCDMB requires ISO 9001:2015 for NCEC applications in manufacturing, fabrication and construction, and quality control inspection and testing. See NCDMB registration: NOGIC JQS and NCEC explained.
- Tenders: many government, multinational and IOC tenders ask for ISO 9001 or score it in prequalification.
- Exports and supply chains: international buyers often require certified suppliers.
- Better operations: clearer processes, fewer errors and complaints, and decisions based on data.
Step by step: from start to certificate
- Decide the scope. Agree which sites, products and services the certificate will cover. If you need it for NCDMB or a tender, make sure the scope matches the services you will be bidding for.
- Build your quality management system. Document how you work against the clauses of ISO 9001:2015: context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement. Keep it practical; most of the evidence is the records you already produce.
- Run the system and keep records. Operate the system for long enough to produce evidence, usually two to three months. Record customer feedback, nonconformities, corrective actions and objectives.
- Internal audit and management review. Audit your own system against the standard and hold a management review. A certification body cannot go ahead without both.
- Apply to an accredited certification body. Submit an application with your scope, number of employees and sites. The certification body calculates the audit days and sends a quote.
- Stage 1 audit. The auditor reviews your documents and readiness and confirms the plan for Stage 2.
- Stage 2 audit. The auditor checks that the system works in practice through interviews, site visits and records. Any major nonconformities must be closed before certification.
- Certification and surveillance. After an independent technical review, the certificate is issued for three years. Surveillance audits follow in years one and two, then recertification.
What a credible ISO 9001 certificate shows
Before you choose a certification body, check what its certificate will look like. A credible ISO 9001 certificate shows:
- The accreditation mark of an accreditation body that is an IAF MLA signatory, such as NiNAS in Nigeria
- A clear scope that describes your actual products and services
- Your sites and the certificate number, issue and expiry dates
- A verification link or barcode, so customers and NCDMB can check it online

Cost and timing
Cost depends on your number of employees, sites and the complexity of your work, because these set the number of audit days. Our guide to ISO certification costs in Nigeria explains what goes into a quote. For most organisations, the full journey takes three to six months.

Frequently asked questions
How long does ISO 9001 certification take in Nigeria?
Most organisations take three to six months from starting their quality management system to receiving the certificate. The certification audit itself, Stage 1 and Stage 2, usually takes a few weeks once your system has been running and you have completed an internal audit and a management review.
How much does ISO 9001 certification cost in Nigeria?
The cost depends mainly on the number of employees, the number of sites and the complexity of your work, because these set the audit days. See our guide to ISO certification costs in Nigeria, or request a quote from SCL.
How long is an ISO 9001 certificate valid?
Three years, provided you pass annual surveillance audits. A recertification audit before the end of the third year renews the certificate for another three years.
Is ISO 9001 required for NCDMB?
NCDMB requires an ISO 9001:2015 certificate for NCEC applications in the Manufacturing, Fabrication and Construction, and Quality Control Inspection and Testing categories. The certificate must cover the services applied for and be issued by an IAF-accredited certification body.
Can SCL write our quality manual for us?
No. A certification body cannot consult for the organisations it certifies, because that would compromise its impartiality. You can build your system yourself or use an independent consultant. SCL Academy offers ISO 9001 training to help your team.
How do I check that an ISO 9001 certificate is genuine?
Check it on the certification body’s own verification portal and, for accredited ISO 9001 certificates, on IAF CertSearch. Also confirm the certification body’s accreditation with the accreditation body.
